Opening sequence: Flipper and a friend (dolphin) are swimming around and the friend gets caught in a net.
Keith has a friend who is a tuna fisher but it's o.k..... Alan Riley is the only tuna fisher to have been awarded the Dolphin and Whale Society Award of Commendation for Dolphin-Safe Fishing Practices. However, his career is ruined by a home video, shot by his first mate, that shows Alan clubbing a dolphin that was caught in his net. The next day Alan dies in a diving accident and is found by Keith and Pam.
Pam, in the meantime, is working on a dolphin signature whistle database, recording various dolphin whistles. Flipper introduces her to his friend who's caught in the net. Pam records her whistle but is unable to help her at that point.
Keith later finds a discrepancy in the video. There's a piece missing so you can't actually tell who's clubbing the dolphin. And Pam discovers that the dolphin in the video is Flipper's friend whom we know is alive (and still has netting wrapped around her). They realize the video's a fake and they go to tell Alan's wife. Alan's wife tells her friend, the first mate, and the two of them set out to kill the dolphin. Mike and Maya have found the dolphin stranded in half Moon Bay and Mike's about to call for help when the wife and first mate show up and threaten Mike. Pam and Keith arrive and a boat chase begins. The bad guys' boat is beached and the two are caught. It was all a set up so the wife and the first mate could run off together. But now, all's well that ends well, the dolphin's o.k., and Flipper carries Alan's ashes out to sea.
