Jessica Alba in Her Own Words
October 1999

As soon as we met our covergirl, Jessica Alba, we knew it would be impossible to write an objective article. Fact is, the 18 year old actress is so darn nice and down to earth we just wanted to be friends with her. And we're totally stoked about her recent roles in Never Been Kissed and Idle Hands. Oh yeah, and she's gorgeous but totally oblivious to it, which makes her even cooler. See, we can't stop. So instead of embarrassing ourselves, we decided to let her fill you in.

on her costars: "Love Drew-she's awesome. She's the most humble, beautiful, loving human ever. You just want to hug her all the time because she's constantly giving out love. And when you're around her she sets this peaceful tone to everything with joy and love-she's awesome. Devon was my costar in Idle Hands, he was a sweetheart, really good, really professional and there was Seth Green. He's awesome. Any mood I was in-if I was crabby he came and took the time to talk to me. He's really funny, hysterical. If you're feeling bad he'll make your day and if you're feeling good he'll make it even better."

on her favorite movie: "I've seen Shakespeare in Love so many times. I've seen it once fully but I'll go in and get pieces of it if I'm going to another movie. I'll go there and just watch it for an hour. It's the best movie ever. The passion. It's so beautiful. I hope to have that one day-the love."

on veggie dogs: "I love to cook. I experiment all day long with different foods. I love mac and cheese. We [Jessica and her cousin, Jessica] put veggie dogs in our mac and cheese and it was so good "cause it's so old school. When I was little, we used to put hot dogs in tacos "cause everything was in a taco when I was little and now I'm reliving my childhood with veggie dogs."

on raves: "I love going dancing. I like hip hop when I'm in the mood. I love jungle music and trance. I don't do any drugs though. When I'm there [at raves] I have sno cones "cause it's so hot and they're close to my favorite thing. My favorite thing in the world is a Slurpee. But I love to dance-it's one of my ways to release, to get into the music and go for it. And I love raves also because nobody's there to pick up, it's so dark and there's so much going on and everybody can just freak out and go nuts. Normally at home at 2 o'clock [in the morning] I'm gone but when you're there it's just about the vibe and the energy of everyone else."

on being a girl in a boy's world: "I wanted to play football. I wanted to be a quarterback but then I got boobs so I couldn't be in football. They wouldn't let me play Pop Warner which is like the little football league. I have no aim but I can throw kind of far and I've always had this big thing about not throwing like a girl, my dad always taught me, so I love baseball. I got on the softball team and loved it. I played outfield and catcher. I'm all about sports."

on conforming: "Don't conform. Be happy with who you are. These people you're going to school with now, you're probably never going to see them again. School's about studying, it's not about socializing. I know that sounds stupid and preachy but it's so pointless to get caught up. The people you're trying to impress aren't going to be around for the rest of your life, so you might as well be smart and make the most of it while you can. If you're happy that's all that matters. I never really clicked with the people at school. I'm not real soci, so I never fit in with the real preppy girls but I'm not a hardcore drug addict so I never fit in with those girls and I'm not latina, mexican, chola girl so I never fit in with them. I kinda did the whole loner thing."
